Beauty smote his heart, he looked up from the forsaken land & hope returned to him

Tonight I’m sitting in my new bedroom here at Thomas Lane, smelling of bonfire smoke and listening to the crickets out my open window. I went out to a friend’s farm tonight for our monthly discussion group little knowing that UNC would beat Miami tonight in what may be the biggest upset of the college football season.

I think I would still choose the evening at the farm though. After the discussion finished we sat around the bonfire and a guitar came out. I enjoyed noticing the little details of the evening: the orange, rising moon, the shadows of the torches and the embered glow cast upon different faces. It was also good hear some live music for a bit, to be able to slow down enough to listen.

It’s also good to sit here and try to think of what to write about the evening. I don’t think I let my mind course over conversations or experiences enough, looking for themes and moments; remembering snapshots and emotions.

On the Bus

leave a comment »

Today I was on the bus coming back from Duke talking to one of my classmates named Dalia who was on her way to the dentist. As we got to talking it came out that she has met George Bush twice in her four months in the states. As I probed her it turned out that she had presented a two hour talk at the G8 summit. In her words “I was the only person who wasn’t a president in the room.”

She also mentioned that Laura Bush is a lovely person.

I wonder what it would have been like to come to Chapel Hill or Duke as an undergrad and mingle with the larger world. I wonder if my view of the world or confidence would have developed quicker. Whatever it means it also means that you my friends are only two degrees of separation from eight prime-ministers!

Couple of Thoughts

with one comment

It has been a bit since I’ve blogged and there are a couple of reasons for that. For one I spent the better part of three days this weekend near Roan Mountain, TN high up on a ridge, being blown around the balds and seeing some nice views.

Another reason has been being in the midst of an extended move into my new apartment. Hopefully by the time this weekend ends my new room will be in a semblance of order and we’ll have a working oven in a clean kitchen. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll even have living room furniture!

A third reason for my blogging absence is that I’ve been too involved with the immediate to listen to the ideas that sit just past the edge of my conscious though. I often use blogging or journaling to try to find the thoughts that parade through my head when I’m trying to read or listen to a speaker or nap and mock my determination to concentrate or fall asleep. Only they rarely return when I return to normal life. It takes a lot to grab them and make them an organized part of my worldview.

Today, as I walked a new route back from the library, where I had just spent an hour reading about the de-concentrating of America’s urban poor, to downtown Chapel Hill, I found one of those thoughts.

You Get What You Pay For

with 7 comments

So a couple of Fridays ago I dropped by my friend Bret’s place while out in Carrboro. We chatted for while about our weekends, the concert that night and his thoughts about his date the next night. As I was getting ready to go I mentioned what I was doing Saturday morning and our proceeding conversation went something like this:

Andy: So I’m due for a haircut tomorrow.

Bret: Actually I need a trim as well. Would you mind sticking around for a few minutes and cutting it again?

(I had buzzed it once this summer.)

Andy: Sure.

(Clippers come out. I grab the biggest guard and proceed to buzz his hair to an even one inch all around as we continue to talk.)

Andy: Ok. Now all we need to do is trim around the ears and clean up the back before we finish. Where are you and E. going to eat dinner tomorrow?

(I search around in the box and fortuitously the “right ear guard” falls into my hand.)

Bret: Actually we’re going out for ice cream . . .

(I fire the clippers back up and start cutting again.)

Bret: . . . before going out with a group of her friends for dinner.

Andy: (Gasping) Oops.

Bret: What?

Andy: Ah Bret . . .

Bret: (Confused and then laughing) What . . . ha ha. Real funny Andy.

Andy: Bret I’m so sorry. I think you maybe should look at this.

Bret: Oh no.

(We go into the bathroom and this is what Brett sees.)

Bret: (Breathlessly and for the first time since I’ve known him.) Shit.

The next day Bret and I both went to visit my barber who got a good laugh at both of us. Fortunately Bret was a great sport about the whole thing and we both got a great story out of it!

EFO Comes to Carrboro

with 12 comments

less Michael and plus Andy

Tonight my favorite band, Eddie From Ohio, played in the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro. What an amazing show . . . they played a mix of old and new songs, previewing from their new album which comes out October 19th. I love the stories they tell, how specific and quirky and sorrowful and fun they are, each in their turn. The harmonies and energies swept me up as their ballads mixed their new ventures into blues and rock.

Eddie’s drum routine made me laugh in amazement as his hands turned to blurs on stage. Julie and Robbie brought me to silence and near tears at a number of songs with their lyrics and insights. Michael brought down the house with his ode to the metro-sexual cowboy.

I can’t wait to listen to their new CD.

Something Original

My vision for my blog isn’t to turn it into a picture blog but I thought this drawing Steve did last week of me during leadership was pretty cool. I don’t know that I’ve ever been drawn before.

Purple Flowers

For the first time in a long time I felt like I had some extra time on my hands yesterday. I wrote a long email, threw the disc with Ru, and took some different pictures. This is the best picture from the flower shots.
