This is Why I Love Stewart and Colbert

leave a comment »

My recent discovery at work has been hulu.com. I’ve enjoyed the access to the Daily Show and to the Colbert Report over my tuperwares full of lunch. I particularly enjoyed this clip for how it takes the major media outlets to task. In fairness I haven’t read the report and don’t know how partisan it is but I love the way that Stewart treats the major media outlets. As DeLong would say: John Stewart is a national treasure!

In trying to post the clip above I’ve learned a little bit about international media laws . . . you readers abroad will not be able to see it. Stinky. Even stinkier has been my inability to watch Euro 2008 highlights or any part of the games.  In an era of free information there are some hard and fast boundaries that leave those without cable or TiVo out.

Sunday Flowers

with one comment

It’s a really hot day here in Chapel Hill. I’m just in from an early afternoon in the garden and thought I’d post a few shots.

The day-lilies with their bright spears of orange easily visible from the house are the highlight for me at the moment. They were a great gift from our neighbors and soon there will be at least a dozen more alight in the center of the yard. At least something in the yard seems to love the 98 degree sun!

The perfect blue cornflowers are the only flowers yet from my flower garden. It looks like the marigolds, cosmos, zinas, and one other kind will flower.

That’s about a 50% success rate for a year old set of seeds. Next year when if I put that much work into preparing the beds I’m going to 1) mulch and 2) start the seeds inside so I know what I’m getting and where!

The last cool thing currently in bright bloom is the lavender planted a year ago. If it is to follow Jeanie’s rhyme of wisdom then I can’t wait to see it next year. Maybe it will have a fantastic smell as well as a fantastic color.

“First year it sleeps,
Second year it creeps,
Third year it leaps.”

The First Fruits of the Season

with 4 comments

Working so much so far this summer has left me with few daylight hours at home. Tonight has been especially nice as I actually got off at 5pm and have been able to weed my section of the garden (which was desperately in need of weeding), to elliptical, and to write emails that don’t have a thing to do with budgets. Praise God!

One nice thing from the garden has been the arrival of fresh strawberries. Sure it’s only been 3 and yes we’ve worked on them for two years but still they were pretty tasty. It’s a cool feeling to grow a bit of your own food. I really liked the way they tasted as they melted in my mouth. Here’s hoping that the other three make it!
