A Lovely Day

with one comment

Today was lovely.  I spent 5 hours this afternoon in the garden expanding shaded bed, planting Moroccan spice sweet peas along the full sun of the fence, and replanting some canna lilies to a spot where I hope they will finally bloom.

The day was also better for working in the garden with Bart, JQ, and Jon as they began to work on their plots. Lengthy visits from Bret, Marjorie, and the C’s just made it better.

Lots and lots of lovely fun.  Thought this shot was especially nice.

College Graduates

with 9 comments

Was working on my data today and produced this interesting graph of the wealth of a country against the percentage of people with a college degree.  Any particular country stand out?

This is a bit deceiving because many European countries have excellent technical programs that give people good training without college degrees (here is that picture) but it’s an interesting look none the less.

Warmth.  Shelter.  Undemanding hospitality.  Exhausted students sheltering in another’s home.  Praise God.

Pink Camellia

with 5 comments

Some years the camellias in the front die from late frosts.  This year the pink one is as pretty as I’ve ever seen it.  They’re a balm of beauty to welcome us home.

Combative Relationship

with 2 comments

Given the violence displayed in this picture, I’m not sure that my sister Elizabeth‘s time at seminary has improved her relationship skills.

In the next shot she lands a punch.  For my own dignity I’ve chosen not to post that one.

A Photo from a Friend

with 3 comments

Out of the blue a friend of mine sent me this picture yesterday from his wedding which was a couple of years ago.  Is too fun not to post.

For Christmas Charity got me The Bread Baker’s Apprentice which has helped produce some amazing cinnamon rolls,  tasty cinnamon, raisin walnut bread, and most recently ciabatta.   Now I’m baking on the pizza stone and trying to mist the oven for extra “spring.”

The good news is that all the recipes can be made with the kitchen aid mixer.  That really helps when working with seriously wet dough.  The bad news is that most of the recipes require a day’s head start, but as it turns out, it’s that extra day of the dough fermenting that makes all the difference.  The bread is pretty amazing.

An Email from a Student

leave a comment »

A followup email from a student inquiring when she would get my comments on her paper.

This is so embarrassing, I just checked my “sent” folder and discovered I did not send the prospectus to you. I am so sorry, I feel like such an idiot. Attached is the prospectus.

Tis been a day filled with students (and a professor) white as sheets when they realize they’ve forgotten to bring their essays to class . . . or forgotten to come to class to give the exam.  Oops.

Makes me think again about the balance between grace and holding people to high expectations.
