Late April is . . .

with one comment

Late April is . . .

Wrapping up planning for London, Normandy and Paris (just one week away!).  Printing maps, learning transport systems, making to-see lists.

Grading frantically all weekend to turn 750 blue book pages around in 72 hours.

Hosting a pastoral candidate for our church.

Working hard on the dissertation.

Putting the last of the plants we’ve grown from seed into the ground.

. . . .

My eyes stop focusing around 6pm every night.   Sleep needed.

Peonies Again

These might be my favorites of all the garden.  Each spring they’ve greeted me without fail.  They’re so big and fluffy and smell wonderfully.

Azaleas

with 3 comments

The azaleas are at their full bloom this week.  I’m a sucker for azaleas and these are some of the prettiest I’ve ever known.  They’re beautiful in the crisp cool of the morning and a welcome home bright sunshine of the afternoon.

The Extended Family

My grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Tuesday.  To celebrate we all flew into Shreveport and traveled to a cabin near a lake, eating dinner together, playing games and having long conversations on the porch amidst the golden dusting of pollen that settled over everything.

It was a lovely weekend.   I enjoyed the long conversations with many family members, including some cousins who I’m just getting to really know.   I also very much enjoyed the sense of peace and rest that came from being leisurely for several days.  I’ve been reading Peterson about leisure and I’m durn convicted about my busyness and lack of silence and leisure in my life.  I’m also working on how to combine that with working hard.  This quote keeps running around in my head:

“It was a favorite theme of C.S. Lewis that only lazy people work hard.  By lazily abdicating the essential work of deciding and directing, establishing values and setting goals, other people do it for us; then we find ourselves frantically, at the last minute, trying to satisfy a half dozen different demands on our time, none of which is essential to our vocation, to stave off the disaster of disappointing someone.”  Peterson, The Contemplative Pastor.

Here’s a shot of the K’s.  This is the side of my family that’s willing to let their hair down.  Love it.
