Spring is Coming

Crocuses are out.  Now we just need to top 60 one day and see something green on a tree.

We Bought a House

with 2 comments

TheNewHouseYesterday Charity and I bought a house (pictured right).

We woke up Friday morning, went over to see the place one last time, and then went to the realtor’s office to sign a lot of paper work.  It was fun.  It was our fourth time there and we’ve liked it more each time.  Now we own the property, though the seller will rent back from us for a while so we can finish out our lease.

We’re excited to not have downstairs neighbors, to paint, to have a yard, and to live somewhere (hopefully) for many years.

Still I’m a little perplexed by the way we were treated during the experience.  Everyone at the reality company greeted us with a grin, a huge smile, and a hearty handshake as if I had just had my first child, “It’s a house, and she looks just like you!”

I’ve signed lots of rental agreements over the years.  This felt about the same,  I’ve agreed to pay a bill to live in a piece of property.  It’s a property I really like.  We’ve made a huge investment that we hope will pay off over the years.  But it doesn’t feel like a life event.  I don’t feel like I’m an adult now or that I’ve achieved a life long dream.  It’s a purchase.  I think it’s a good decision but there are risks (declining housing market?) and responsibilities (lawn mowing again?!) and tradeoffs.

The experience reminded me a lot of shopping for a new car.  The ordinariness of both has surprised me.

Saturday Morning Finances

leave a comment »

Some strange behavior by the faithful Hyundai has us researching car options.  Our new personal finance crush has three interesting and thought provoking articles on car buying.  Lots to think about.

Also thinking hard about leaving Sprint for Ting.  Preliminary calcs look like our monthly bill will go from $171 a month down to $90 a month.  That’s about $1,000 a year in savings.

If we didn’t have working Sprint phones we’d head over to Republic Wireless.  $20 a month for unlimited text, talk and data?   (you have to buy their specialized phone). That would save us $1,300 a year.  Yes please!

Ah sleepy financial Saturday mornings.
