Dust to dust

leave a comment »

Tonight, as Charity and I comb through a treasure chest of art prints, I emptied out an old frame we picked up several houses ago.

As I emptied it I wondered who these people are and what it is that brought them together. Who cared enough to have it framed and protect it many years? I wondered if any living soul knows who these nine people are and if there exists another picture of them in the world.

And as I picked it up it began to crumble into dust in my hands, early images fading away. What little knowledge of them in the living further disappearing…

A Man and His Dog

Had a lovely visit with my grandfather and other assorted family in Atlanta this weekend.  He’s 93 and still doing 10 minutes on the treadmill every morning after he works on the NYTimes crossword puzzle.

There were three small dogs that ran around the house as a pack.  I have to say that McDuff is my genuinely my favorite, pictured here with Dad.

Mount Auburn Cemetery

with 3 comments

IMG_8933My sister is in town this weekend visiting and we made the trip to Cambridge today to poke around and check out Mount Auburn Cemetery, which is as beautiful as advertised.

The forsythia, daffodils, cherries, azaleas, and rosebuds all blazed with color.  Who would have thought that such an oasis exists so close to downtown Boston?

We spent two hours in the cemetery.  Starting with Dorothea Dix‘s grave and then winding our way up to a towering view of downtown Boston.

Perhaps our biggest surprise was finding a grave with my sister’s name on it.  Let’s hope she lives the same 90+ years that woman did.

Lovely, peaceful, beautiful and stirring.  Definitely worth a visit, especially in the spring.

Blowing in the Wind

A couple of weekends ago Charity and I made a trip to the beaches of South County for the first time.  It was cold and beautiful with the bright sun and the chilly wind.  The sand was brilliant and worth seeing.

Charity already posted an album on Facebook but I thought I’d post a few of my own here.  It was great fun and very beautiful.  We had power, heat, food, and sleds, which is about all anyone could ask for in such a storm.  It was lovely.  It’s less lovely now as the remnants are piled everywhere narrowing the streets but was still lovely.  I haven’t seen that much snow at once in over 20 years.  It really was fun.
